What we do:

• take paint samples
• use a microscope to examine the samples
• document results in reports
• uncover original decoration by removing later layers of paint

Why we do it:

• to study the history of painted decoration on an object
• to identify original paint layers and decoration
• to provide information to assist with conservation treatment
