Microscopy

What we do:

  • use polarized light microscopy for identification of pigments
  • use reflected light microscopy for examination of paint cross sections
  • produce reports with photographs to document the findings

Why we do it:

  • to identify and characterise original paint layers; pigment identification and paint stratigraphy
  • to clarify the history of the object
  • to assist uncovering of original decoration when it has been painted over
